Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative

  • Over 5 million hectares of steppe landscape protected for wildlife in Kazakhstan
  • Saiga antelope population has increased from 29,000 in 2005 to >2.8 million
  • Two large herbivores reintroduced to the area: Kulan (Asiatic wild asses) and Przewalski’s horses
  • Outreach work conducted with local schools
  • Ranger and aerial patrols established, and detection measures implemented to tackle wildlife crime
