Sir Partha Dasgupta joins CCI for Fireside Chat on Rethinking the Value of Nature

30th July 2025

On 28 July, the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) hosted a special fireside chat with renowned Sir Partha Dasgupta, following the recent release of his latest book On Natural Capital: The Value of the World Around Us. The event invited attendees to explore how economic thinking intersects with biodiversity conservation, ethics, and the challenge of defining values in a changing world.

The session was moderated by Professor Bhaskar Vira, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Environmental Sustainability, and Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge, and organised by students from the University of Cambridge Masters in Conservation Leadership programme.

Sir Partha shared insights on the limitations of traditional economic models in capturing the true value of biodiversity and ecosystems. The result was a compelling conversation shaped by the theme “The Price for Everything, the Value of Nothing”, which explored how economic frameworks can overlook nature’s complexity. He emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to reshape how nature is accounted for in decision-making.

Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, share their thoughts and reflections on the themes discussed with a Q&A led by the students from the University of Cambridge Masters in Conservation Leadership programme.

“This was a really insightful conversation by Sir Dasgupta that shed light on the intersection between natural resources, studies and demography.” – Research Assistant, University of Cambridge

The event highlighted the power of collaboration and interdisciplinary dialogue in addressing complex environmental challenges. CCI continues to support spaces for reflection and exchange, bringing together diverse voices to shape a more sustainable future.
