Hutan Harapan is important for its key biodiversity – 28 globally threatened species, including the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and Sumatran elephant, as well as the world’s rarest stork – the endangered Storm’s stork. It is a refuge for other wildlife, over 60 small and large mammal species and more than 300 bird species, more than 50 species of reptiles and more 40 species of amphibians. In 2019, seven frog species new to science were discovered during a research expedition by students.
