The Greater Gola Landscape is a transboundary region encompassing key protected areas across Sierra Leone and Liberia: The Gola Rainforest National Park, Gola Forest National Park, Foya Proposed Protected Area, Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, Kambui Hills Forest Reserve, as well as surrounding areas of buffer zone and community-managed forests. Many of these sites are recognised for their international importance for biodiversity.
CCI partner, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has been actively working in the landscape since the early 1990s. Through partnership working between the Governments of Sierra Leone and Liberia, civil society and local communities, conservation and livelihood projects have now been underway in the Greater Gola Landscape for over 30 years, aiming to deliver benefits for people, nature and climate.
Some of the key work areas we are supporting in the landscape are:
- Sustainable financing –The REDD+ project in Sierra Leone is generating income which drives conservation work and management of Gola Rainforest National Park
- Project proposal development & fundraising
- Capacity building of the local civil society organisations
- Community forestry
- Protected area establishment & management
- Research & monitoring
- Conservation enterprise – e.g. Cocoa business, & ecotourism
- Policy & advocacy
- Communications
