When the UK government ignores mounting evidence for climate breakdown, a group of scientists turn to civil disobedience to warn the public themselves, risking arrest, a criminal record and their professional reputations. A window into the world of reluctant activism, Plan Z explores the power of protest when established routes of influence fail.
Why are scientists breaking the law for climate change? And what would it take for you to feel – and act – the same way? Plan Z challenges many of the assumptions surrounding disruptive climate protest by exploring the ethics and human instincts behind it that are common to us all.
This event will be followed by another on Thursday 14 October, when a panel of scientists will discussing their contribution to the book Scientists on Survival on 14 October. Find out more about the Scientists on Survival event here.
Panel:

Louisa Jones is one half of the two-person team behind Plan Z. She and Vladimir Morozov have spent five years documenting climate protest in the UK, using multi-camera livestreaming to capture some of Extinction Rebellion’s biggest moments as well as grassroots demonstrations at the 2021 Glasgow climate conference, for media pop-up, COP26 TV. Their footage has been used by news channels from the BBC to Al Jazeera Arabic. Louisa also has a decade of experience as a nature and heritage educator and currently coordinates a nature recovery project for Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Dr Charlie Gardner is a conservation scientist, climate & nature activist and writer working at the intersection of climate change, nature and society. He has worked on endangered species conservation in Mauritius and spent a decade helping establish new, community-managed protected areas in Madagascar, and has published widely on tropical biodiversity and its conservation. He is a leading advocate for the involvement of scientists in social movements, and long-time member of Scientists for Extinction Rebellion.

Professor Nathalie Pettorelli is a conservation biologist at the Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London. Her expertise includes climate change ecology, biodiversity monitoring, remote sensing as well as environmental and wildlife management. Her research aims to inform environmental and wildlife management, supporting decision-makers in identifying options that are likely to best support nature recovery in times of rapid global environmental change. Nathalie co-founded Soapbox Science with Prof Seirian Sumner in 2011, a public outreach platform for promoting women and non-binary scientists and the science they do.
