The photojournalist Toby Smith has spent the last 10 months as the Artist in Residence at the University of Cambridge Conservation Institute, based in the David Attenborough Building.
One of the projects Toby has worked on during this time has been with CCI partner the British Trust for Ornithology; specifically with their cuckoo tracking team. This led to Toby’s visit, earlier in 2016, to the Bateke Plateau and forests of Gabon, where many of the UK’s cuckoos migrate to in late summer. The beautiful photographs Toby made during this trip have now come to roost at the David Attenborough Building, in a temporary public exhibition just outside the conservation campus. Capturing the landscapes and human occupants of this part of Gabon, Toby’s exhibition provides images of a region linked to British habitats by the common thread of these iconic migratory birds.
Toby and his project collaborators are also giving a talk (“Going Cuckoo“) at the David Attenborough Building about the cuckoo project on 18 October at 18.00 as part of the University of Cambridge’s Festival of Ideas. The exhibition of Toby’s photos can be seen on the podium of the David Attenborough Building until 7th November.
