In Conversation with Dr Robert Bullock

​Join us at 5pm on Tuesday 24 November when marine researcher Dr Robert Bullock from Save our Seas Foundation will deliver a talk covering the use of biologging to reveal the hidden lives of sharks and rays, the effects of global climate change on baby sharks, and how to drive conservation research into actual conservation outcomes.

​Robert will dive into how biologging tools help reveal hidden secrets of marine species and what they need from their environments, and how these tools are advancing and what they might be able to do in future. Robert will also discuss his recent research into the at the potentially disastrous effects that both acute and long-term ocean warming may be having on juvenile sharks using nursery areas. Finally, Robert will draw on his personal experiences trying to drive research forward into actual conservation action and how he has learned from both successes and failures.

About the speaker

​I am a marine researcher specializing in the application of telemetry technologies to the study of sharks and rays. Although based in the UK, the majority of my research has been conducted in the Seychelles and the Bahamas, where I have used a range of tracking approaches to investigate the movement, behaviour, and ecology of elasmobranchs in marine environments. I am particularly interested in integrating emerging technologies and developing new techniques to improve our understanding of animal movement and to support the conservation and management of threatened marine species.

​I can trace my love for science and the marine world back to my youth and to Sir David Attenborough, whose words instilled a curiosity that soon grew into a passion for learning about nature. As an adult, I pursued this passion, studying marine and freshwater biology at the University of Hull. I conducted my PhD research at the Bimini Biological Field Station, where O worked as a Principal Investigator and studied the fine-scale behaviour of young lemon sharks using the Bimini Island nursery sites. I then moved on to broaden my skill set as a post-doctoral research associate with the Marine Biodiversity Unit of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), assessing extinction risk to marine species. For the past five years I have worked for the Save Our Seas Foundation D’Arros Research Centre as its Research Director, defining the current long-term programs and supervising student projects. I have recently moved back to the UK and now work as Head of Conservation of the Deep Aquarium and as lecturer in Wildlife Conservation at the University of Hull.  My career thus far has taken me to the intersection of scientific research and conservation action and I am driven to deliver science with tangible conservation outcomes.
