Background
I have been the Director of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) since summer 2007. After post-doctoral research on bird song at the University of Sussex in the early 1980s, I moved into the nature conservation sector, initially on upland bird surveys for the Nature Conservancy Council. Twenty years later, I led English Nature’s work to deliver the Government target on SSSI conditions from my position as Director Protected Areas.
